Mr Norman Fernandez, is a Partner of Messrs C. Sukumaran & Co. He has law degrees from
Anglia Polytechnic University, United Kingdom and University of Tasmania, Australia. He was admitted
to the Malaysian Bar on 8.12.1995. He has been in active practice since 1.1.1996.
He gained practical experience in Banking and Hire Purchase law at Messrs J.S Pillay & Co and Messrs
Tam Cheng Yau & Co. Among the Financial institutions for which he handled were Bank Bumiputra
Malaysia Berhad, Public Bank Berhad , Malayan Banking Berhad, Southern Bank Berhad and many
finance companies among them Kewangan Bersatu Berhad, Abrar Finance Berhad and Cempaka Finance
Berhad.
Thereafter in 1998, he opened his own private practice specialising in Civil and Banking Defence
Litigation and Criminal Practice, first under the style and name of Norman Fernandez & Associates and
thereafter under the style and name of Ashekin, Norman Fernandez & Associates. He also drafted
commercial documents such as Joint Venture Agreements for local and foreign companies, while being
invited to be legal advisors to many local and overseas companies such as Protecpac Pte Ltd (South
Africa) and Chubu Corporation (Japan).
On the 1.5.2009, Norman Fernandez’s firm Ashekin, Norman Fernandez & Associates merged with
Messrs C.Sukumaran & Co. With the merger, he brings to the firm of Messrs C. Sukumaran & Co, his
vast experience of Defence Litigation. This means that Norman Fernandez and the Firm of C.Sukumaran
has the advantage of being able to anticipate many aspects of the law and issues which would normally
be raised by lawyers acting for Defendants/Borrowers.
Norman Fernandez has competently and successfully conducted Trials and Appeals in the High Court
and Appellate Court.
In addition to his legal practice, Norman Fernandez was also a part-time law lecturer for the University
of London (External Law Degree Programme) and University of Malaya (Jurisprudence Law Degree)
programme and examiner for Association of Business Executives (United Kingdom). He has been invited
to give in-house lectures at various organisations including Johor Malay Chambers of Commerce.
